Bike wreck

I was in a bike wreck yesterday afternoon.

I was happily cycling along, listening to my MP3 player and enjoying the wonderful sunny weather when some jerk barrelled out into the cycling lane without looking, leaving me with two choices – either attempt to cycle through his car or dump my bike (and me) on the curb. Realising that cars are animate objects, I opted for the latter. I attempted to bunny hop the curb, but was at the wrong angle (which I knew before I tried it, but gave it a go anyway because I had nothing to lose) and was launched off my bike and onto the sidewalk, landing on my right shoulder.

I cut open the palm of my left hand, my right kneecap and also my right elbow, and also tore one of my favourite pair of trousers (my bike is fine). My right shoulder and other parts of my body are still in quite a bit of pain, so I've called in sick to work today.

The asshole in the car motorist? He sped off like nothing had happened, even though he had seen the whole thing.

Ironically enough, the song I was listening to at the time this happened was Just Another Day by Oingo Boingo, and the lyrics include this (basically, the story of my life):
And just when I think
That things are in their place
The heavens are secure
The whole thing explodes in my face
Here are a couple of photos taken with the (terrible) camera on my mobile phone.

  3. wow, i didn't know as a motorist, you could leave the wounded. It makes playing hit the pedestrian/cyclist way more fun.

  4. Oh crap, J! That's awful. I'm so sorry.

Can you maybe report it to the police with an "Anzeige gegen Unbekannt"? and they can see if there were any witnesses?

  6. Unfortunately, there weren't any people around that might have seen it. Also, it wasn't a hit and run, just a jerk in a car who didn't see a cyclist. I didn't get the reg number because it all happened very quickly. After I flew off my bike, I ended up with my face in the other direction of the car. By the time I got up, he had left.

  7. Oh - that's awful! Sorry to hear of it.

I've been reading your blog for a while (usually as I sit here in my cube eating lunch - Albertson's chicken noodle today - only a little bit icky) and enjoy checking in. Thanks!
