I've finally found

something good about living in this small-sorry-excuse-for-a-city. The strikes won't affect me.

Alternate title 1: We're turning into France.
Alternate title 2: Deutsche Bahn: 'You can't blame this one on us (yet).'

Germany faces widespread strikes

Lufthansa says it will cancel domestic and European flights

Unionised workers at German airports are threatening to strike soon, amid dissatisfaction over wages.

The Verdi union said employees at eight airports would strike on Wednesday, with Lufthansa saying 142 domestic and European flights would be cut.

The airline urged passengers to take the train instead - but separate strikes by union BVG are also expected for Wednesday, reducing train services.

Strikes in various public services sectors in 11 German states are threatening to throw the country into chaos. Verdi, a giant services trade union, called for the strikes in protest over ongoing wage negotiations.

Employees of the local public transportation sector stopped working for four hours beginning at 3 a.m. Tuesday morning, March 4, in the northern city of Hanover, where the first visitors' day at the huge computer fair CeBIT began.

"Most of the strikes are affecting northern Germany," a Verdi spokesman told German public broadcaster ARD.

The warning strikes in the public services sector are to last until Wednesday across the country, Verdi said.

The union has laid down work in several branches including local public transportation, kindergartens and public offices, trash collection services, hospitals, nursing homes, libraries, theaters and administrative offices.

The trade union estimated that 67,000 workers in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia would be participating, according to ARD's online portal tagesschau.de.

The union has also threatened strikes at some of Germany's airports, including Frankfurt, the country's largest airport, and Munich.

Yep, they're striking like crazy up here. Trains and buses early yesterday morning, kindergartens and hospitals and garbage pick up too. Today it's the airport with 2 hour delays for most flights. We're on a different bus system out here in the boonies so it hasn't affected us and we can still use public transport to get to school or downtown.

But, ahem, I've been hearing that Deutsche Bahn (well, the locomotive drivers, anyway) are possibly going on strike indefinitely starting next Monday. :-O Here we go again.

Suggest move back to the States! Would certainly help your blood pressure! OR is complaining your way of life?

Christina, that's why I put 'yet' in alt title 2.

anon, thanks for being concerned for my health, but my blood pressure was checked last week and is just fine. As far as complaining goes, most people complain about strikes.

I've never been so happy to own a car in my life. It's just nuts all these strikes...

I don't blame them for striking. These workers have hardly had any raises in the last few years. Everything is more expensive and yet their salaries remain the same.
